NAMI NJ en Español is an awareness & education
program developed by
NAMI NEW JERSEY to serve the Hispanic/Latino community in New Jersey.
Goals of the Program: Provide
support and information to families affected by mental illness. Encourage
an understanding of mental illness among the Hispanic/Latino population. Increase
the level of cultural competency among mental health providers. Provide
education for mental health professionals to help them better understand
cultural and treatment issues relevant to this population. Help
break the barriers of stigma and shame associated with mental illness
that exist within the Hispanic/Latino culture.
Increase
awareness of resources available so families can live a healthy
and productive life. Provide
information and referral service. Educate
Family members in their own language to help them find understanding,
acceptance and support.

Self-help
Support Groups
In NAMI NJ En Español Self-Help Support groups conducted
in Spanish, caring family members help one another learn to
cope with the effects of mental illness. They find understanding,
acceptance and mutual support in times of crisis. The groups
offer hope, support, education, and a community of friends
who understand.
NAMI NJ En Español Self-Help Support groups are currently
offered in several counties. Bi-lingual volunteers have been
trained to facilitate the self-help support groups.

Mental Health in the Latino Community Conference: 2011
In Search of Our Well Being: Conference on Mental Health in the Latino community, NAMI NJ en Español’s 3rd Spanish language conference, was successfully held on April 9, 2011 in New Brunswick, NJ.
Over 260 people from the Latino community attended and learned about mental health, mental illness, resources and treatments. Support for this conference has been provided by NAMI NJ, the Rutgers Community Health Foundation, PRAB Inc., and the RWJUH Community Health Promotion Program.
The Newark Public Library Educational Workshops
The Newark Public Library partnered with NAMI NJ to offer a series of free workshops in Spanish on mental health. These informal, one-and-a-half hour workshops were offered once a month in the Library’s Sala Hispanoamericana from October 2010 to January 2011. Workshops were resented by Martha Silva, Director of NAMI NJ en Español and National Trainer for the "Family to Family" program.
National Minorities Mental Health Awareness Month: 2010
In observance of the National Minorities Mental Health Awareness Month, NAMI NJ en Español held a mental health educational event on July 17, 2010 at St. Augustine's School Gym in Union City, NJ. Featured speakers were Dr. Manuel Sanchez, and Melanie Perez, Ph.D. A total of 95 people attended the event, on a very hot summer day.
Mental Health in the Latino Community Conference: 2009
NAMI NEW JERSEY successfully held its conference in Spanish
Mental Health in the Latino Community on Saturday,
October 3, 2009 in New Brunswick, NJ. The goal of this conference
was to offer mental health information to the Latino community.
Over 280 people attended and had the opportunity to interact,
in Spanish, with mental health professionals who talked about
treatment modalities available and a variety of skills to
cope with mental illness. Topics included mood disorders,
medication compliance, senior's mental health, and a special
session for parents of children with behavior problems on
mental health and communication skills.
