NAMI NEW JERSEY programs:
education for professionals

ONE-DAY "EDUCATION FOR PROFESSIONALS" TRAINING

Families typically sit in the audience and providers instruct. This one-day training reverses that method. Those of us who have lived with mental illness for many years will teach what we know and what we think is important about this experience for compassionate professional caregivers who work with our family members to understand.

All information in the training is the result of lived experience and deals with first- hand knowledge of the psychological and social dimensions for the family of a serious mental illness in a loved one. The 4-person training team is prepared to present on-site at any New Jersey host agency.

Because the training team is composed of all family members, it will be their perspective on mental illness and will hopefully help professional caregivers know more about the emotional experience of families affected by mental illness.

TEACHING TEAM

The teaching team for this course is specifically composed to reflect a significant component of the collaborative treatment team:

the Consumer,
the Family Member,
the Family Member/ Professional

We hold together because we recognize the importance of connection: connection among family members and the collaborative connection between the family and caring mental health professionals. We know from experience that illness and recovery take a long time, and that while professional caregivers come and go, the family goes on forever.

GOALS OF THE TRAINING

  • Increase understanding of the impact of mental illness on the whole family.

  • Increase understanding of the need to improve the mental health system's response to families.

  • Increase influence in setting agency policies and procedures to better reflect best practices in family suppor
