NAMI NEW JERSEY’s 2010 conference, Hope for a Better Future: Early Intervention & Community Support on Saturday, June 12, 2010 successfully addressed several important issues and needs in the mental health community. Internationally known researchers Dr. William McFarlane and Dr. Barbara Cornblatt presented cutting edge research and information on the enormous potential of early intervention for adolescents and young adults exhibiting early symptoms. Concurrent workshops addressed several important issues, including mental health during the college years, veterans issues, family, peer and faith based supports, school intervention programs, treatments and medications and rehabilitation.

The Gov. Richard Codey Mental Health Champion Award was presented to Edward Von Lindern, Jr., for his 30 plus years of advocacy on behalf of people with mental illness. Drew Horn, founder to the Turn-a-Frown-Around Foundation, and Jacquese Armstrong, writer and poet, were awarded the Dara Axelrod Expressive Arts Award.

Families, consumers and providers all rated the conference as highly informative and energizing, bringing hope and promise to the ongoing struggle to empower mental health advocates and improve the lives of people affected by mental illness.
