NAMI NEW JERSEY programs: CAMHOP-NJ
(Chinese American Mental Health Outreach Program in New Jersey)
|
|
|
CAMHOP-NJ (Chinese American Mental Health Outreach Program in
New Jersey) is a NAMI NEW JERSEY initiative to help people of
Chinese origin (including immigrants from mainland China, Hong Kong,
Taiwan, and their descendents) in New Jersey gain better understanding
about mental illness as a biological based and treatable disease.
CAMHOP pronounces like "Golden Crane" in Chinese. The
crane is a symbol of health and longevity in Chinese culture.

Four Major Goals of CAMHOP-NJ:
Increase
awareness among Chinese immigrants in NJ that mental illness can
be treated, and that anyone can be affected by mental illness -
there are no barriers based on class, education or background.
|
|
Help
Chinese individuals and families affected by mental illness to set
up local self-help groups, and
encourage them to learn coping skills through sharing
with people with similar experience.
Provide
referral service for Chinese speaking mental health providers to
Chinese families and individuals
who have limited English skills.
Help
mental health professionals in NJ to be aware and competent of Chinese
culture vis-à-vis mental
health issues and to understand the unique struggles
of Chinese consumers and families in seeking services.

CAMHOP-NJ
Self-help Group
|
|
CAMHOP Self-help group meetings are for Chinese families and
individuals coping with mental illnesses
(Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Schizophrenia,
etc.) in New Jersey. The goal of the self-help support groups
is to provide Chinese immigrant families who struggle with
mental health issues with a safe environment to have emotionally
support discussions, linkages with available resources, exchange
of successful coping strategies, etc.
Although our monthly self-help support group meetings are
NOT run by mental health professionals, we sometimes have
professional guest speakers joining the meetings to host a
question and answer session or conduct an educational presentation.
If you would like to be notified of the meeting schedule and
programs, please email namichinesegroup@yahoo.com
to sign up to our email list.
Our self-help support group meetings are held in Edison and
Whippany; and all meetings are conducted in Mandarin and/or
Cantonese. Pre-registration is required.

Chinese
In Our Own Voice Living with Mental Illness
Presentation Successfully Held
|
|
The first ever Chinese In Our Own
Voice Living with Mental Illness presentation
(IOOV) across the nation was successfully held in the NAMI
NJ office in North Brunswick on Nov. 21, 2006. Our two trained
Chinese presenters' candid and informative presentations were
well received by the community members. The presentation was
a great stride made in educating the Chinese community on
mental illness and wellness, as well as in fighting against
stigma within the community.

Educational
Workshops for Chinese Community
|
|
CAMHOP-NJ organizes educational workshops periodically for
the Chinese community in New Jersey. These mental health presentations,
tailored to the specific needs and issues of the Chinese Community,
aim to help Chinese immigrants better understand mental illnesses,
as well as helping them navigate the mental health system
in New Jersey. Please click to see the workshop
