RUTGERS HOSTS MEETING ON CLEMENTI TRAGEDY

Nearly 450 people gathered  in the Rutgers Student Center in New Brunswick for a passion-filled event that was part political rally, part memorial and part confessional. For two hours, politicians called for new laws to protect young people from bullying and internet harassment. The event was the first of two town hall meetings in memory of Clementi, the Ridgewood teenager who jumped off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate and another student allegedly used a webcam to secretly watch him in an intimate encounter with another man.

MUSEUM WORKING ON MENTAL ILLNESS EXHIBIT

Last Halloween, the iconic Red Mill in Clinton Town attracted national attention for staging a haunted house that portrayed psychiatric patients as murderous ghouls. Critics said the “Asylum of Terror” fundraiser perpetuated cruel myths about people suffering from mental illness. Those myths, in turn, can reinforce stigma that often deter people from seeking medical attention they need.  This year the museum is also working with advocacy groups and healthcare professionals to coordinate the state’s first-ever comprehensive exhibit on the history of mental illness in New Jersey.
