$200M TO HELP HOUSE MENTALLY ILL

At a ceremony near Greystone, Codey signs plan to create 10,000 units

At a ceremony in Parsippany, near the Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital, Codey approved a plan to create 10,000 affordable housing units designed for people with mental illness and developmental disabilities. It is hoped the infusion of cash, over 10 years, will allow 2,500 people who are needlessly housed in state psychiatric hospitals and developmental centers to move into outside living, Codey said.

FAILING TROUBLED CHILDREN

Four Years and $700,000 Later, State Catches Onto Corey Davis

In what has to be one of the worst examples of bureaucratic stupidity, the department's Division of Children's Behavioral Health has been handing millions -- $343 million this year -- to 800 private agencies, no questions asked. FOR MOST BIPOLAR PEOPLE, MEDICATION CAN AMELIORATE THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF THE DISEASE

The signs of bipolar disorder can show up in a variety of ways, as a handful of local residents can attest to. One woman randomly showed up at a lavish party in New York City, an Old Bridge man impulsively decided to take off for Canada, and another woman announced she was going to have a baby through divine intervention.

PROPOSED REDUCTIONS TO MEDICAID

In April, Congress agreed on a budget resolution that will require changes to mandatory entitlement programs that will reduce spending by $10 billion over the next five years. While they are not required to take all of these savings from Medicaid, it is expected that Medicaid will be a prime target. The specifics of these changes to Medicaid will be considered by the Senate Finance Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee in September.

LANDMARK ROADMAP FOR MENTAL HEALTH REFORM RELEASED

The Campaign for Mental Health Reform has released an important report recommending a series of actions that Congress and the Administration can take to improve services for people with mental illnesses. The report, entitled "Emergency Response: A Roadmap for Federal Action on America's Mental Health Crisis," describes the negative consequences, including criminalization, homelessness and suicides, that occur when people do not have access to the treatment and services they need.
