Annual Conference and 20th Anniversary Celebrations

"Honoring the Past, Building the Future"
“Honoring the Past, Building the Future” was the theme of NAMI NJ’s annual conference and 20th Anniversary Celebrations, and the event was just that – a nostalgic look at our beginnings as well as a readiness to face an increasingly bright future.
Family members and consumers cheered as Elena Stolzer, NAMI NJ First President and plenary presenter talked about how far we have come, and listened intently as Michael Hogan, Chair of the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health laid out the plans for rebuilding the mental health system on a national level, and Bob Davison, Chair of the NJ Governors Task Force spoke about the new statewide effort to get NJ’s mental health system back on track.
 
Awards were presented to the early leaders, Trustees, Affiliate Board Members, Family-to-Family Educators, Committee Menbers, In Our Own Voice Presenters, Support Group Facilitators and all those who provided leadership, advocacy and mutual support that have helped the New Jersey Alliance for the Mentally Ill blossom into the NAMI NEW JERSEY of today. Governor Richard J. Codey was honored as New Jersey's Mental Health Champion, and first lady Mary Jo Codey gave an encouraging and touching speech as she received an award for her courage and dedication to advocating for those affected by mental illness.
 
Eight conference workshops presented a variety of choices for the attendees, ranging from Medications and New treatments to the strides made in Law Enforcement education, employment issues, and the experience of minority families affected by mental illness.

At the exhibit room a range of research institutions and treatment facilities handed out information. The NAMI NJ sales table did brisk business under the guidance of NAMI NJ Consumer Outreach Liaison Jay Yudof.


The conference ended with a trip down memory lane provided by a slideshow of pictures from NAMI NJ’s 20 years of providing support, education and advocacy in New Jersey.
